A microphone, dynamic or a capacitor type, is delivered helplessly with any kind of air movement beyond the pure sound. Train, driving or weather-related wind, but even a simple draft, which arises when the microphone swings around, can lead to loud bubbling sounds that ruin a sound recording. Even the breath of a speaker close to the microphone can cause "pops". The windshield absorbs wind and ensures that it does not penetrate the microphone capsule. A windbreaker fur windshield, which keeps normal wind noise away from the microphone, is best suited for outdoor shooting.
